I tested Duolingo, Babbel, and Pimsleur to see which app could help me reach my French fluency goals. Here's my honest review of each app, including their pros, cons, and pricing.

I've always aspired to be fluent in multiple languages, but at 27, with English as my only language, I fear I'm lagging behind in my polyglot dreams. The truth is, it's partially my fault. I studied French in elementary and high school, but my practice has been minimal since then. Essentially, I'm starting from scratch. Unlike private or group classes, which are effective but expensive, language learning apps offer an affordable and flexible alternative.

I've dabbled with them in the past, but this time, I dedicated myself to consistently testing three different apps to determine which would propel me closer to French fluency. My journey involved exploring Duolingo, Babbel, and Pimsleur, each with its unique approach to language acquisition. All three apps are accessible on a range of iOS and Android devices, including phones, laptops, and tablets. Duolingo, with its user-friendly and playful design, has been a casual companion since 2017. Its bright, colorful mascot, Duo, guides you through lessons with the help of engaging characters like Lily and Falstaff. The app boasts over 40 languages, allowing you to explore as many as you desire. However, the free version restricts you to five lessons per day with a limit of five mistakes. Each incorrect answer deducts a heart, and completing a practice lesson replenishes one. Beyond the free tier, Duolingo offers several paid subscription plans. Super Duolingo, at $12.99 per month or $59.99 annually, provides an ad-free experience, unlimited mistakes, and personalized reviews to address your language weaknesses. The Super Family plan, at $9.99 per month or $119.99 annually, allows up to six users to share a Super Duolingo subscription. Duolingo Max, priced at $29.99 per month or $168 per year individually, and $200 per year for a family plan, encompasses all the benefits of Super Duolingo plus AI-powered features like role-playing, answer explanations, and video calls for speech practice. Babbel, with its minimalist design, appeals to those seeking a clear and organized learning experience. Its interactive lessons, coupled with in-app podcasts, enhance comprehension and conversation skills. Babbel offers 14 languages, including French, Spanish, and German. The free signup allows you to sample the first lesson of any course. Subsequent access requires a subscription, with various options available. For shorter-term learners, monthly subscriptions range from $17.95 for one month to $107.40 for a year-long membership, equating to $8.95 per month. Babbel also offers a lifetime subscription for $299. Babbel Live, priced from $99 per month for unlimited group classes to $149 per month for unlimited private and group classes, provides a more immersive experience with access to certified instructors for flexible, on-demand language lessons. Pimsleur differentiates itself with its namesake method, designed to expedite speaking and comprehension through core vocabulary building, recall, repetition, and conversational learning. Pimsleur emphasizes spoken practice, aiming to help you achieve a near-native accent. Lessons are designed for hands-free navigation, allowing you to learn while multitasking
