The US is experiencing a rise in flu cases as the country enters flu season. Doctors are seeing an increase in both hospitalizations and community-based metrics.
Flu activity is on the rise in the United States, with a 12% increase in cases for the week ending December 21st compared to the previous week. This increase comes as the country enters flu season, and doctors are seeing a surge in both hospitalizations and community-based metrics like emergency room visits and test positivity. While flu activity was highest in Louisiana and Oregon the week ending December 20th, it was also reported to be high throughout the South and along the West Coast.
This year, the flu got off to a later start, with activity only picking up in recent weeks. Health officials attribute this increase to several factors, including the ongoing interplay of Covid-19 with other respiratory viruses. According to the CDC, so far this season, there have been an estimated 3.1 million illnesses, 37,000 hospitalizations, and 1,500 deaths from the flu. While those with chronic conditions and people over the age of 65 are at a higher risk of severe illness, people of all ages can get very sick. Dr. Scott Roberts, associate medical director for infection prevention at Yale New Haven Health, noted that flu numbers are approximately half as high as they were this time last year at Yale New Haven Hospital, adding that they have had a very limited number of severe cases so far
