Flu cases at emergency departments more than doubled compared to the week before.
According to data from the Alabama Department of Public Health, for the week ending on December 20th, flu cases at emergency departments more than doubled compared to the week before.Dr. Kevin Michaels with the Mobile County Health Department said, “Over the last week, we saw a jump from about 11 out of every 100 patients that present to the ER or urgent care with influenza like illness, to as high as 17.
So we’re seeing that increase that’s been seen across the country regarding influenza like illness.” While flu can make you feel miserable, Dr. Michaels said the last place you should go if you have flu symptoms is the emergency room. ER’s won’t prioritize flu patients unless their illnesses are life-threatening. “Typical flu can be managed by your primary care provider. Going to your doctor and saying, ‘I’m ill’. He or she will probably test you. Tell you whether it’s flu or not. There may be some medications based on the age and other risk factors they can put you on but a lot of it is just supportive care,” said Dr. Michaels.Dr Michaels said to help prevent the spread, wash you hands, and stay home if you’re sick. He also recommends getting the flu vaccine. There’s also a new strain of “super” flu hitting the U.S. Dr. Michaels said there are no reports of any cases in Alabama yet. This year’s vaccine wasn’t made to fight super flu, but, Dr. Michaels said it could still help keep symptoms less severe.Man arrested in connection to Christmas morning shooting on Dawes Road
