With the search over for mass murder suspect Robert Card after his body was found Friday, community members in Lewiston, Maine, are now beginning to heal.

With the search over for mass murder suspect Robert Card after his body was found Friday, community members in Lewiston, Maine, are nowOne community hit hard by the violence is the deaf community. Several deaf community members were killed at Schemengees Bar and Grille. One of those victims was Bryan MacFarlane.

“First, I thought, ‘My friend.’ I texted him, ‘Are you okay?’ And didn’t hear from him. I thought, ‘Maybe he’s working,’" said Vikki Ash, MacFarlane’s friend. “Of course, I panic. I FaceTime him. I call him. I call him. I say, ‘Please answer the phone.’” Ash says MacFarlane had just moved to Maine to pursue his dream job on a farm. Just one day prior to the shootings was his first day of work.

Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Executive Director Karen Hopkins asks that the public gives them time and space to grieve after losing “wonderful important members of the community.”
