The Latvian animated film Flow, known for its unique silent storytelling and stunning visuals, takes home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Flow , a Latvian animated film without any dialogue, has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 97th Academy Awards . Presented by Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn, Flow tells the story of a group of animals – a cat, a dog, a capybara, a secretarybird, and a ring-tailed lemur – who try to escape rising floodwaters in a seemingly post-human world.

The film's unique style relies on animal noises for communication, and its stunning visuals were created using the open-source software Blender over a five-year period. Flow's director, Gints Zilbalodis, achieved this feat on a budget of $3.6 million, and the film has since grossed $20 million worldwide. The film's success began at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim and went on to win Best Animated Feature Film at the Golden Globes. Composer Rihards Zalupe's captivating score is also nominated for an Oscar. Flow faced strong competition from other nominated films, including Inside Out 2, The Wild Robot, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Memoir of a Snail, each bringing their unique stories and animation styles to the forefront. The Best Animated Feature category at the Academy Awards is relatively young, first awarded in 2002. Pixar has dominated the category, with eleven wins and nineteen nominations. Dreamworks, despite winning the inaugural award with Shrek, has only one other victory to its name. Last year, the award went to Japan's Studio Ghibli for The Boy and the Heron. Flow's victory marks a significant moment for Latvian animation and for films that embrace unconventional storytelling
