Florida State's road trip to the West Coast concluded with a disappointing loss to the Stanford Cardinal. Despite limiting Stanford's star player, Maxime Raynaud, the Seminoles struggled offensively and couldn't overcome a barrage of three-pointers from the Cardinal.
Florida State closed out a two-game road trip to the West Coast against the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday evening, aiming to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Cal Golden Bears earlier in the week. Their challenge was made even tougher by facing arguably the ACC's best player, Maxime Raynaud. The first half was, to put it mildly, a struggle.
Both teams struggled to find the basket, but Florida State particularly lacked offensive firepower beyond Jamir Watkins, Daquan Davis, and Malique Ewin. While they did a commendable job of containing Raynaud, it allowed players like Oziyah Sellers to exploit open shots from beyond the arc. By halftime, Stanford held a 33-25 lead, having shot 6/15 from three-point range. Davis, Ewin, and Watkins had accounted for 22 of Florida State's points, while no other Seminole had managed to score a field goal. This lack of offensive balance was unsustainable for a Florida State team seeking a valuable Quadrant 1 win. Stanford continued their hot shooting in the second half, seemingly finding even more success from three-point range. Florida State finally started to generate some offense, but every time they made a run, Benny Gealer or Sellers would answer with a crucial three-pointer from deep. Despite cutting the lead to seven points midway through the second half, a questionable flagrant foul on Watkins helped Stanford regain a double-digit advantage. Further complicating matters, Coach Hamilton was forced to sit his two best players, Watkins and Ewin, after they received technical fouls earlier in the half. Florida State couldn't get the lead under ten points until the final two minutes, and although they had a few opportunities to close the gap to six, they ultimately fell short. Stanford secured the victory, 78-71. Jamir Watkins led Florida State with 20 points and eight rebounds, but he also committed six turnovers. Malique Ewin contributed 16 points but shot a subpar 3/9 from the field, relying heavily on free throws for his scoring. Daquan Davis added 14 points to the Seminoles' effort. Every other player on the team combined to shoot only 7/19. As a team, FSU shot a dismal 37.9% from the field in this game, a far cry from the efficiency needed to defeat a respectable opponent like Stanford. Oziyah Sellers had a breakout performance against the Seminoles, scoring 27 points on an impressive 10/16 shooting. While Florida State successfully limited Raynaud to just eight points on 4/11 shooting, the contributions from Gealer and Jaylen Blakes (13 points each) proved crucial for Stanford's victory. The Cardinal shot a blistering 11/24 from three-point range, compared to FSU's 6/20
