Voters notably were absent in this week's presidential preference primary.
A sign is seen outside a polling place at the Boca Raton Library during the Florida primary election, Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in Boca Raton, Fla. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - This week’s presidential preference primary saw low voter turnout across the state, with 21.57% of all eligible voters casting their ballots, according to data from the Florida Secretary of State’s office.
Notably, the turnout wasn’t just low. It was the lowest the Sunshine State has seen since 2004. That year, the total voter turnout in the presidential preference primary was 20%. Democrat John Kerry fought off eight other candidates in Florida and moved on to face Republican incumbent George W. Bush.
Election experts believe the low voter turnout was a direct result of a lack of competition on the ballot this year. “Voters don’t just respond to elections, they respond to competition. And since there is no competition, it’s just not much to be responsive to,” Dr. Lonna Atkeson, director of the Leroy Collins Institute at Florida State University said.*What makes a race competitive? More than one candidate for the Republicans or Democrats had a competitor who had not dropped out by the state’s primary day.
