Republican victories in Florida's 2024 elections solidify their control over the state and project influence onto the federal level. Donald Trump's return to the presidency is accompanied by the appointment of numerous Florida political figures to his cabinet, including Senator Marco Rubio. Despite efforts by Democrats, the Republican supermajority in the state legislature remains intact, and two citizen initiatives to legalize recreational marijuana and abortion were unsuccessful. A controversial incident involving corrections officers assaulting an inmate also garnered public attention.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - Florida’s policies will have a major influence on the federal government in 2025. The next president is from the Sunshine State, and he’s taking state leaders with him to serve in his administration. Republicans swept Democrats up and down the ballot after Democrats spent the year saying Florida was in play, especially with the chance to repeal one of the state’s most controversial laws.

With Donald Trump returning to the White House on January 20, he is bringing many of Florida’s political leaders with him, including nominating Senator Marco Rubio to his cabinet.Democrats made no ground in breaking the Republican supermajority in the state legislature despite fielding a candidate in every district. They will go into the 2025 legislative session with two fewer votes from last year after losing a seat in Miami-Dade County in the election. In December, Tampa state Rep. Susan Vadeles switched her party affiliation to Republicans, creating the largest GOP supermajority in the history of the Florida House. “The party is going to have to relook at whether having somebody in every seat is more important than focusing on a few winnable districts,” Susan MacManus, political analyst, said. The two citizen initiatives also failed. Despite constitutional amendments to legalize recreational marijuana and abortion getting more than half of the vote, neither met the 60 percent threshold needed to pass.after the Florida Supreme Court upheld the previous 15-week ban. Florida is the first state to reject a constitutional amendment protecting abortion access since Roe V Wade was overturned in 2022.were fired after a viral video showed one corrections officer slapping an inmate twice while another watched. It’s unclear if they were charged.
