Leada Gore al.com PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Firefighters in the Florida Panhandle continue to battle wildfires that have forced thousands of evacuations.
According to the Florida Forest Service, there are at least three blazes underway in Bay County. The fire is believed to have originated in Gulf County before spreading into Bay and Calhoun counties. All three counties are under states of emergency.Multiple Bay County evacuations have taken place due to the blazes, including the area between Transmitter Road and Star Avenue and south of Highway 231 and U.S. 98 and Bear Creek, the area south of Scotts Ferry Road and east of Highway 231.
The Bay County Fairgrounds has been established as a shelter for evacuees and pets. Bay County remains under a county-wide burn ban with no burning of any kind permitted. The fires are northeast of Panama City Beach and the beaches remain open. However, Red flags were flying at the beach on Monday due to high surf and strong currents.
