A Sarasota-native who was crowned Miss USA last year will give up her crown, citing the need to protect her mental health.

In an Instagram post, Noelia Voigt made the announcement Monday, saying she would resign and put down the sash and tiara she won in September, while representing Utah. “Never compromise your physical and mental well-being. Our health is our wealth,” Voigt wrote in the post. She went on to express her appreciation for the people who supported her along the way, as well as the coaches and directors that helped her.

Shortly after Voigt’s post went up, the Miss USA organization offered its support for the departing champion, writing, “he well-being of our titleholders is a top priority, and we understand her need to prioritize herself at this time.” The organization added that it is now working on its succession plans and will soon announce who will be stepping into the role.“As individuals, we grow through experiencing different things in life that lead us to learning more about ourselves,” Voight wrote. “My journey as Miss USA has been incredibly meaningful, representing Utah with pride, and later the USA at Miss Universe.
