The 12-year-old girl was in critical condition as of Monday.

A Florida middle school student sustained critical injuries Monday after her mother accidentally ran her over during school drop-off.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. Monday, which was the first day of school for Booker Middle School in Sarasota. A Florida Highway Patrol report says the driver of the involved vehicle, identified as the mother, was stopped in a right turn lane in front of the school. When the 12-year-old student exited the car, she dropped markers and pens onto the road, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Authorities say the mother began to drive forward while the girl was picking up the items, "causing the wheels to collide" with her.

The student was flown to an area hospital afterwards with critical injuries, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Her condition as of Tuesday afternoon is not immediately clear. When reached for comment, Sarasota County Schools told The National Desk the incident was an accident. The district said it "encourages all families to follow district and school safety protocols," as well as to "use the designated student pickup and drop off areas on school campuses."
