Robert Sielski had a unique goal, and rain or shine, the 80-year-old was going to achieve it. Here's his story:
Robert Sielski chats with a race medical official after finishing the Florida Publix Marathon in Melbourne, Florida, on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023.In all, he's run more than 70.Sign up for the Morning Brief email newsletterAt the recent Florida Publix Marathon, a lone runner shuffled across a long causeway between the beach and the mainland, battling gusty winds and his own determination.
"I'm going to be determined and, you know, I'm not going to quit unless I really have to," Sielski told weather.com in an interview at his home in Melbourne Beach, Florida. Sielski ran his first marathon in 1987, when he was 36. But it wasn't until years later, when he noticed other runners with t-shirts mentioning it, that Sielski challenged himself to complete one in each of the 50 states. That sent him to places like Crater Lake, Oregon, where there is sometimes snow on the course. And Overland Park, Kansas, where Sielski remembers running a marathon about two years ago in temperatures that topped 90 degrees.
Like most marathoners, Sielski's training regimen goes far beyond the minimum. He runs upward of 50 miles per week, plus biking and swimming. And yes, he sometimes participates in triathlons, too.
