Attorney General Ashley Moody announces new initiatives to combat human trafficking in Florida, including installation of new signage at rest stops and increased reward money for CrimeStoppers tips leading to the rescue of victims.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody unveiled two new initiatives this week aimed at combating human trafficking and providing tools and incentives to Floridians. Moody announced the installation of new signage at all 53 Florida rest stops, highlighting the state's anti-trafficking hotline, 1(855) FLA-SAFE. These signs will be placed both outside restroom areas and inside the stalls, urging travelers to report any suspicious activity.
This initiative comes after Moody learned that the National Human Trafficking Hotline wasn't always directly forwarding tips to law enforcement. The state's new hotline, operated within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), ensures that reported information is immediately sent to the best-suited law enforcement agency. In addition to the signage, Moody also announced a new public-private partnership between the Florida Association of Crime Stoppers and Place of Hope. Individuals who call **TIPS and provide information leading to the rescue of a human trafficking victim could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $7,500. **TIPS is a unique, anonymous statewide tip line that automatically routes callers to their nearest Crime Stoppers office. Since taking office in 2019, Attorney General Moody has been dedicated to tackling human trafficking in Florida through various initiatives. These include: establishing a Statewide Trafficking Tip Line, launching the First-Ever Human Trafficking Investigative Strike Team, partnering with the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) to form Highway Heroes, launching the 100 Percent Club to recognize businesses actively combating trafficking, creating an Online Safety Toolkit for parents, raising awareness through partnerships with industries leading up to the Super Bowl, and training gaming and passenger transportation employees to identify and report trafficking. Moody also supports legislation that ensures traffickers face pretrial detention. Through the Office of Statewide Prosecution, over 130 traffickers have been charged since 2019 with a near-perfect prosecution record
