★★ Florian Zeller's The Son is a contrived, heavy-handed depression drama
One of the opening images of Florian Zeller’s is of a baby in a cot, looking blissfully content and at ease with the world. Happiness is in very short supply elsewhere in the film. This is a study of teen depression – of two struggling, divorced parents trying desperately to work out why their beloved child is so miserable.
Nicholas clearly has very ambivalent feelings toward his father, whom he reveres but has never forgiven for walking out on the family and marrying someone else.
