Netflix shared the first poster for East of Eden, which prominently features Pugh looking off to the side. Below her, a house is engulfed in flames as two people observe the devastation from outside. The poster also includes the tagline"You are what you choose.
" The popular streaming platform also revealed that East of Eden will be released in fall 2026, but a specific release date has not been announced yet. Check out the poster below: Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath author John Steinbeck published the bestselling East of Eden in 1952, a novel that would eventually be adapted multiple times for both the big and small screens.
The first adaptation, directed by A Streetcar Named Desire's Elia Kazan from a screenplay by Paul Osborn, was released in 1955 and went on to earn four Oscar nominations, winning for Best Supporting Actress . The film, which stars Julie Harris, James Dean, Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos and Burl Ives, is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critic score of 86%.
Over two decades later, ABC aired a three-part miniseries of East of Eden that scored high ratings and won Outstanding Art Direction for a Limited Series or a Special at the Emmys, with additional nominations for Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited Series or a Special and Outstanding Individual Achievement – Special Class. At the Golden Globes the series won Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television and Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television .
Another remake of East of Eden has been in development multiple times over the past 20 years, with such filmmakers as Ron Howard, Tom Hooper and Gary Ross reportedly in discussions to direct, but no movie ever materialized. Then, in 2024, Netflix announced it was making its own version of East of Eden, with Kazan's granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, attached as the director and Pugh on board as a cast member and executive producer.
Zoe Kazan is an actress who has starred in such films as It's Complicated, Ruby Sparks and The Big Sick. On the small screen, she's appeared on Olive Kitteridge, The Deuce, The Plot Against America and Clickbait. Her performance in Olive Kitteridge earned her nominations at the Emmys and Critics' Choice Awards, while she and her Big Sick co-stars received a SAG Award nomination in 2017.
Pugh's co-stars include Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders. Pugh's character, Cathy Ames, is one of the main figures in East of Eden, which centers on the good and evil deeds of a multi-generational family in the Salinas Valley. Garth David and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre are the directors of Netflix's East of Eden remake, with Kazan and Jeb Stuart serving as co-showrunners and co-executive producers.
East of Eden will be released on Netflix in the fall of 2026.
