Rushing floodwaters returned to the Sandy Creek area, nearly a month after the July Fourth floods, washing out a special-needs animal rescue sanctuary outside Leander.

Safe in Austin Rescue Ranch said what happened Friday night was five times worse than what hit the ranch in July of last year. All of the animals were safe and accounted for, but much of the property was underwater and has been washed away.

“There is never any kind of river or creek on our property, and yet, this is what it looks like,” the sanctuary’s founder, Jamie Wallace, said. “It happened so fast. It’s like the rain sort of started a little bit and then everything was flooded,” Wallace said. Evie, a three-legged, one-eyed goat, was among the animals that nearly died in the flood.

Staff said she tried to hide from the rising water by curling up in a red tube.

“Half the tunnel was filled up. So we assumed there was nobody in there. And then she said that she found her. And so I threw off my sweatshirt and I just crawled in from the other side to get her out,” said Lyssa Harper, the Healing Hearts program coordinator at Safe in Austin.

Years of work at the sanctuary were destroyed in a matter of hours, including an area known as the Enchanted Forest.

“It’s ironic because it’s our it’s our serenity place. It’s a place to take a breath and feel safe and loved and last night it was completely underwater and raging,” Wallace said. Asked what it looked like now, Wallace said, “Yeah it’s uh it’s not the beautiful peaceful trail that we work really hard to provide. It’s a mess.

”“We needed to get animals fed, animals safe, animals dry, and then all of the spaces where the children go as well cleaned up as quickly as possible,” said volunteer Jamie Rosales. Safe in Austin is seeking more manpower, supplies and donations to help get the ranch running again. Wallace said it will be a long time before the sanctuary is back to normal.
