Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Friday that although floods in eastern Kentucky aren't uncommon,Beshear said children and entire families are expected to be among the dead.
High-speed floods destroyed homes and bridges and swept cars away, and rescue teams supported by the National Guard are working to reach victims in rural, difficult-to-access areas. The governor said more rain Friday may exacerbate the floods, and that fully rebuilding the hardest-hit areas will likely take over a year.
