Forecasters say some areas of the state could get hit with 65 mph wind gusts, power outages and 2 to 3 inches of rain.

Safe to take a shower during a thunderstorm? Here’s what experts warn.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for most of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and the New York City metro region for Monday night into early Tuesday morning because severe thunderstorms could dump very heavy rain in a few hours. The flood watch, issued shortly before 4 p.m., will be active from 8 p.m. Monday through 6 a.m. Tuesday in every county across the Garden State, except for Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland.

A flood warning or a flash flood warning is more urgent than a watch, so drivers and pedestrians should avoid flooded streets and move to higher ground if a warning is issued. The thunderstorms are expected to start firing up in western and southern sections of the Garden State by about 7 p.m., then move into central and northern New Jersey by 8 or 9 p.m.
