Blindsided residents in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond will be told their homes are at risk of flooding from overflowing drains.
More than a third of all properties in Yarra City Council are at risk of flooding from overflowing drains according to drastic new modelling that has blindsided residents who now face rising insurance costs and reduced home values.The maps designate 22,179 properties as being liable to flooding – just over a third of the 60,037 properties in the municipality.
“Nothing in the paperwork tells us how bad the stormwater drains are, can any be repaired, what would the cost be to fix this,” he said. Fitzroy North resident Kenneth Gomez, whose home is now in the flood zone, wasn’t aware Yarra’s modelling was being undertaken. He lashed the consultation process and lack of detail for impacted properties.
Ratepayer organisation the Yarra Residents Collective’s co-founder Adam Promnitz said it was unfair to release the modelling with almost no community awareness.
