Strong thunderstorms dumped an inch of rain in less than an hour in some locations across the Garden State.
As of 12:15 p.m., Newark Airport was placed under a ground stop because of the thunderstorms moving through parts of Union, Essex and Bergen counties, with 35-minute departure delays on flights. By 1:50 p.m.
Some of the flood advisories were lifted by 1 p.m., but the advisories in Bergen and Hudson counties are effective until 1:45 p.m. and the alerts in Middlesex and Somerset counties will continue through 2:45 p.m. The main threats of flooding is in low-lying areas and on streets with bad drainage. The weather service issued a more urgent flash flood warning for northern sections of Monmouth County, effective until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, because of heavy rain falling in that region of the state.
