Bronx resident Miguel Garcia hasn't missed a single shift volunteering in 6 yearsDr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?"He could be anywhere in the world.
For 24 years, he has worked transatlantic routes as a flight attendant for a major U.S. airline, but twice a month, without fail for the past six years, Garcia chooses to be in the Bronx, volunteering at Food Bank NYC mobile pantries. He has not missed a shift. Originally from the Dominican Republic and a father of four, Garcia understands firsthand how challenging it can be to make ends meet, even with a full-time job. During his volunteer shifts, he not only helps feed hundreds of New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity, but he is also able to bring home fresh produce and pantry staples for his own family -- all while giving back to others in his community.As communities across the country honor MLK Day through service, Garcia's story is a powerful reminder that Dr. King's legacy is not just remembered one day a year, it is lived every day by people who choose compassion, consistency, and community.
