Fleur East says Meghan Markle is viewed as an 'outsider' in our exclusive interview
Back in 2014 she was runner-up on The X Factor and she released her debut album a year later. At our exclusive shoot, Fleur East tells OK! she couldn’t be happier to be back in the recording studio as her new album Fearless is released this month.
After falling for him 10 years ago, Fleur married clothing designer Marcel Badiane-Robin in Morocco last summer. The couple have made a home for themselves in London, but they’ve recently been committed to a long-distance relationship after Fleur landedHere, the 32-year-old singer – who faced the gruelling Bushtucker Trials on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! back in 2018 – tells us all about releasing her latest music, starting a family and beating bullies...It’s so lovely.
Meghan’s still seen as an outsider and that blows my mind. She’s still facing a lot of scrutiny and discrimination. I find that it’s such an inward battle. In one way you’re seen from a position of privilege because you have that white side. But then you’re seen as a part of the black community. I’m not black enough to be black and not white enough to be white either. I’m always feeling in the middle. It’s really difficult and I never know where I sit.
Yeah! The best way I deal with it is by having an out-of-body experience. When I read comments that are negative about me, I just think, “Oh look what they’ve said about Fleur.” I detach myself from it and have a laugh. I’ve been called all sorts of names. Someone called me a Brillo pad once. People will say stupid comments like, “Oh my God, why doesn’t she do something with that hair?” They just want a reaction. I’d never take time out of my day to write something negative about someone.
