With Purdue denying Justice Sueing the ball, McNeil hit a contested, deep 3-pointer with 40.3 seconds left to put Ohio State ahead 69-66. Purdue called timeout and fed Edey, who scored with 28.3 seconds left to pull within a point as the Boilermakers called timeout again with 28.3 seconds left. That made it 52-50 and sent a jolt through the biggest home crowd of the season, but there would be more twists to come. Ohio State took the lead at 60-58 with seven minutes to play, Purdue reclaimed it on a 3-pointer from Fletcher Loyer with 4:36 left to make it 64-63 and it set up a frenetic final few moments.
The injury ended his night and significantly impacted Ohio State’s ability to combat Edey, and he would not be the only Buckeyes starter to go down during the half. McNeil missed a 3-point attempt from straight-on with 13:43 left, and as he came down his right foot landed on Purdue guard David Jenkins Jr.’s foot as he made a late closeout attempt. Play was stopped as McNeil rolled in pain, but after going to the locker room he would return to the bench and, eventually, game action.
