‘Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools: 300 Years of Flemish Masterworks’ is a broad survey now at the DMA.
Oil paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries account for many of the highlights of the show, which is divided into six thematic sections — on religion, portraiture, science, folly, emotion and wonder. Together these convey the great range of functions that art could have in early modern Flemish society.
Meanwhile, the section on portraiture, “From God to the individual,” gives viewers a good sense of the ambition, and self-image, of the patrons who were funding all this art: prosperous bourgeois merchants. The no-nonsenseby Pieter Neefs II and Gillis van Tilborgh, radiate self-confidence and pride in their achievements and social standing.
