At times, Australia have looked weary and flat-footed in the World Cup, especially in the field. But Mitch Marsh says they’re raring to begin their fightback.
Two former Australian white-ball stars think Australia look flat and lack desperation in the field after a long year of cricket, but leading batsman and prospective future captain Mitch Marsh rejects this, saying that having their backs to the wall of two defeats would stimulate the team to produce its best.
“I think one of his strengths as leader is leaning on others. I think he’s doing a great job. He’s a great leader within our group. We’ve all got to make sure we step up and get us a win.”For Marsh, who has made a lean start to what generally is a high-scoring tournament, that means runs, and quickly. “It’s been a tough start personally,” he admitted. “The other night was tough conditions and I wasn’t able to put pressure back on the bowlers, which is a strength of mine.
“I know the batters felt a lot of pressure because they couldn’t get off strike. On the flip side, Australia has been very standoffish. They have been hanging back on the ring, and it just allowed South Africa’s new batters to get into their innings. Maybe that’s more a mindset change more than anything tactical.“Even with the ball, they are a bit standoffish. They are waiting for things to happen and that can become contagious among the group as well.
“In a World Cup, you cannot have periods of time where you’re cruising. Every individual needs to be fully engaged, every single ball, to try and make their mark on the game. It was just a bit too cruisy at times.”Marsh denied that Australia was run-down, but acknowledged the fielding has been below par. He himself dropped Virat Kohli in Chennai, leaving the Indian superstar to guide his team to victory.
