Flash Flood Watch in effect as more heavy rain targets Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia
Forecast

Wet, unsettled weather continues into next week — here’s what to expect

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect this afternoon and evening for areas along and north of I-10, which includes all counties in Southeast Georgia.

An additional 1-3 inches of rain is expected, with some spots seeing up to 5 inches. That’s on top of the 3 to 7 inches that already fell across southeast Georgia over the past three days. Areas south of I-10 have seen less rain — about a half-inch to 2 inches, with a few spots picking up closer to 4 inches — but they’re not entirely off the hook.

Why the flood risk is so high right now The region has been soaking up rain for three straight days, which means the ground is already saturated. More moisture is streaming in from the atmosphere, and that combination is setting the stage for water to pool fast. Expect a break in the rain through late morning. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to fire up and spread northeast across Northeast Florida and into Southeast Georgia.

Some storms could become strong, with gusty winds, heavy downpours, and lightning possible during the late afternoon and early evening. A wave of low pressure is expected to track into Southeast Georgia tonight, keeping the rain going well into the evening and possibly overnight. Temperatures will reach the low-to-mid 80s in Southeast Georgia and the mid-to-upper 80s across Northeast Florida before the storms develop. Tonight, wet and overcast skies will drop temps into the low 70s.

Rough conditions head to the beach A Moderate Rip Current Risk is in place at all area beaches through Monday. Conditions get more dangerous early this week.

Strong and gusty northeast winds arrive Monday night, and coastal and marine hazards are expected to ramp up significantly: Small Craft Advisory conditions are likely for Atlantic waters Tuesday through Wednesday, with occasional gusts reaching gale force Deadly rip currents, rough surf, and substantial beach erosion are likely Minor to moderate tidal flooding is expected Tuesday through Thursday along the Atlantic Coast, the Intracoastal Waterway, and tidal tributaries of the St. Johns and St. Marys River basins
