In the past year, the 16-year-old has improved her junior ranking from No. 173 to top five in the world.

Both her parents grew up in the state and they still have strong ties to the area, but they have embraced the North Texas region. Her mother, Michelle Mitchell, said that most tennis players at her level wouldn’t stay in the area. But she said the local tennis community has been such a good influence on Hovde’s career.Hovde started training with Phil Dent at his family’s tennis academy in Keller when she was around 11 or 12 years old.

“Phil Dent has had an incredible and very special influence on her,” Mitchell said. “She’s been very lucky to have had him for the years that they’ve been together as a team.”Dent said there are many things about Hovde that make her a prime candidate to have a successful career. But it is her work ethic and competitive attitude that really stands out to him.
