Five storylines for the second half of the Blue Jackets' season, from the Connor Bedard sweepstakes to possible deadline targets
ended any chance they had to overcome it and nearly half the lineup is now filled with rookies or second-year players.
While they got it right in 2021 by dealing stalwarts Nick Foligno and David Savard at the trade deadline to assure a bottom-five finish, they’d previously had multiple late surges that damaged their draft positions. A late surge in 2006 also pushed them to the sixth spot, where former GM Doug MacLean selected Derrick Brassard after the first five teams took defenseman Erik Johnson, center Jordan Staal, center Jonathan Toews, center Nicklas Backstrom and winger Phil Kessel. Brassard’s had a solid NHL career, but those five all won the Stanley Cup at least once and have eight Stanley Cup titles between them.
