Michigan football has landed a major recruiting victory with the commitment of five-star offensive tackle Elijah Haywood . Haywood, ESPN's No. 16 overall recruit and third-ranked offensive tackle prospect in the 2025 class, chose the Wolverines over Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Florida State.
His commitment comes on the heels of a strong finish to the recruiting cycle for coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines, who secured 11 ESPN 300 recruits, including eight from the top 100, in the latest cycle.Haywood, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound lineman, initially committed to Alabama in July but decommitted last month before formally committing to Michigan on Wednesday. He made his decision official during a ceremony at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas, surrounded by family and friends. Haywood's commitment is a significant boost for Michigan, which has executed one of the strongest recruiting runs in the country in 2025, particularly in the final stages of Moore's first cycle in charge. The Wolverines' late surge included a series of top-100 pledges, including a crucial flip from LSU to Michigan by quarterback Jadyn Underwood. Haywood's decision was influenced by several factors, including the Wolverines' warm and welcoming atmosphere, their commitment to family, and the expertise of Moore and offensive line coach Grant Newsome. 'They made sure my mom was OK,' Haywood said. 'They made sure my brother who came with me had fun. When you pick a place, it's not only for you, it's for your family. That's part of what did it for me.' Haywood also praised the Wolverines' coaching staff, noting their experience and understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level. 'Coach Moore is a former offensive lineman and Coach Newsome is a great guy, too,' Haywood continued. 'Those guys understand what it takes to prepare every day, workout and win games. They know what it takes.'
