Manager Stephen Vogt discusses the progress and potential of Gavin Williams, Chase DeLauter, Jhonkensy Noel, and Luis Frias as the Guardians contiunue with full-squad workouts.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Here are some quick hitters from manager Stephen Vogt as the Guardians enter their third day of full-squad workouts.“We want Gavin to get back into his delivery. Last year with the injury we felt he never caught his stride.
He’s made some really good adjustments in his delivery to get his pitch shapes back. He really didn’t have his fastball at any point last year. To get the vertical movement back on his fastball, really opens everything else up.”David Fry’s 1-year-old daughter loves watching his ALCS walk-off homer for the Guardians “For Chase, we’re talking about a big body . So it’s learning what it takes to play out every single day with that body. We have great resources around here for that. We have partnered with him on that and that’s probably the best solution to keep him on the field.”When asked what it would take for Noel to become an every day player, Vogt said, “For me it comes down to his swing decisions. The power is real. We saw the hit tool as well. We saw some great stretches where he was taking his singles and walks. With his size , it’s really tough playing every day in the outfield, so we’re going to be really mindful of Jhonkensy and make sure he’s getting reps in right field and first base. To me it comes down to what pitches he’s swinging at. We know what he can do when he makes contact.”“I caught Frias in a spring training game in 2021 for Arizona. He has big stuff. In his first live batting practice, he really commanded the baseball. He has a presence on the mound and he’s not afraid. It’s elite stuff coming out of the bullpen.”There are multiple guys in this organization who can play that position at an elite level. We had that a little bit last spring at shortstop. To ask what I’m looking for, I’m not sure. Usually when you have a competition like that, the players will tell you.”We’re a little rushed for time today: but you can’t skip breakfast because it’s the most important meal of the day. So we’re going rogue here and dining on a leftover Crumble chocolate chip cookie from last night on the way out the door. Yes, I can hear you snickering. Meanwhile, try this one on for size.
