CLEVELAND , Ohio — They dropped the ball at Times Square a while ago. The celebration has come and gone, but it’s still early January, more than enough time to make some resolutions and predictions. Let’s put the resolutions on hold — most of them are written in invisible ink, anyway — and concentrate on the prediction side of this exercise. In Wednesday’s Cleveland Baseball Talk podcast, Joe Noga and I each made five predictions about the 2025 Guardians’ season.

They won 92 games to win the AL Central for the second time in three years and beat Detroit in five games in the ALDS before losing to the Yankees in the ALCS. But that was last year. A new season begins on March 27 in Kansas City so here are my five predictions on just how that season might go. I predict outfielder Lane Thomas will help fill the void by driving in 80 runs, six shy of his career high. After being acquired from Washington, Thomas initially struggled, but bounced back to hit seven homers and drive in 20 runs in September before having a big ALDS against the Tigers.The Guardians’ rotation needs help. While Cleveland finished with the third lowest ERA in the big leagues at 3.61, the rotation posted a 4.40 ERA, while pitching the third fewest innings in the American League at 805. I predict that Aaron Civale will help rectify that when he returns to the rotation just before the All-Star Game in July after completing his rehab from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Jim Thome owns the Guards’ franchise record in homers with 337. I predict that Jose Ramirez, by the end of the 2025 season, will have 285 homers as he continues to close in on that record.
