The five Memphis police officers fired for their role in the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols have been charged with murder.
Chief CJ Davis said Wednesday that the group of cops was “found to be directly responsible” for the attack on Nichols during a Jan. 7 traffic stop. Shortly after being arrested, Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, reportedly complained of “shortness of breath” and was sent to an area hospital. After being admitted to the hospital in critical condition, he died on Jan. 10.
“The news today from Memphis officials that these five officers are being held criminally accountable for their deadly and brutal actions gives us hope as we continue to push for justice for Tyre,” Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, attorneys for the Nichols family, said in a statement Thursday. “This young man lost his life in a particularly disgusting manner that points to the desperate need for change and reform to ensure this violence stops occurring during low-threat procedures, like in this case, a traffic stop. This tragedy meets the absolute definition of a needless and unnecessary death. Tyre’s loved ones’ lives were forever changed when he was beaten to death, and we will keep saying his name until justice is served.
Last week, when the five officers were fired, the department concluded that they had used “excessive” force on Nichols. “The Memphis Police Department has concluded its administrative investigation into the tragic death of Mr. Tyre Nichols,” read the statement. “After a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, we have determined that five MPD officers violated multiple department policies, including excessive use of force, duty to intervene, and duty to render aid.”
