A trio of Homer anglers had no hesitation in releasing a huge, 325-pound halibut.

And he had no intentions of keeping the huge halibut, conservatively estimated to be 325 pounds and 84 inches in length. “But not one single time during that entire 43 years did I ever have intentions of killing this fish,” Walker added.

″I wanted to make sure people understood the importance of releasing these fish. The better eating fish are the smaller ones anyway. It is fun to catch these big fish, but it is very, very important that we keep them in the water for future generations.” That was the philosophy shared on the Alaskan Majestic Fishing Charters boat that day, captained by Kyle Metcalf. ″You’re talking over 4.1 million eggs in that one fish? That’s a breeder, that’s the stock we need to keep replenishing," Metcalf said. ″We need to be focused, it’s 2025, the fish stocks we know are down, sizes are down, so when we catch something like that, showing other people, ‘Hey, it’s okay, you don’t have to kill everything.’ “I just think it is time to set an example and say you know what, I want my kids to have to possibility of catching this fish in 10 years.” It’s an example Metcalf hopes to set for future captains, like deckhand Preston Hewett, who helped reel and capture the moment. “When you see something that magnificent and you see something that is going to have such an impact as one singular creature, you’ve got to put it back,” Hewett said.“How would you feel if your grandchild was able to catch a fish like that? Or your great-great-grandchildren?” he said. “As long as we’re smart about it, we can continue this fishery.”Questions arise following police tasing, punching of State Fair attendee3 Alaskans cut from NFL rosters, waived from respective teams ahead of Week 1AOTW: North Pole sisters silence Patriot doubters over a packed football weekend
