Southeast Chinook catch limits for 2023 decrease under new management strategy.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Department of Fish and Game has announced a nearly 60,000 fish reduction for the 2023 Southeast Alaska Chinook Salmon catch limit.
The United States and Canada ratified the Pacific Salmon Treaty in 1985, an agreement between the two nations to work cooperatively to prevent over fishing and ensure that both countries receive equal benefits from their catch of salmon. The two nations initially used the “Pacific Salmon Commission’s Chinook Model,” to fulfil the duties of the treaty, said Dani Evenson, a fishery scientist with the Department of Fish and Game.
The combined information in the new model has lead to a large reduction in the catch limit. Most of the catch however will be given to commercial troll operations. “It’s split about 80% troll and 20% for sport fisheries,” said Evenson. A small percentage will go to other non-troll commercial operations.
