Fifth-grader Westin Soller woke up to discover his school in Marysville was on a two-hour delay due to snow, then an hour later it was cancelled. While he was thrilled, parents may not have been, but the superintendent of the district says the decision to close isn’t taken lightly.
“I remember the days where you make arrangements, and it's not easy,” said Zack Howard, superintendent of Marysville schools. Soller, and his younger brother and sister, were being cared for by their grandmother, who took them to the library. Soller said he was glad there was no school and said Mondays aren’t really his thing.Debbie Soller, his grandma, acknowledged that her grandkids live on a rural road, but said perhaps the school shouldn’t have closed. “I think it probably could have went just a two-hour delay, but it's OK, at least I get to enjoy them for the day,” she said.Howard said some days it's easier to make the decision to call off school. “It's obviously a difficult decision when right on the cusp,” he said. “It's easy when you know you've got a foot of snow on the ground.” Howard said he drives the roads himself, with the help of other staffers around 5 a.m., with a goal of making a decision on whether the roads are safe by 5:15 a.m. He said he also consults with school leaders of nearby districts.“Right at the cusp of whether or not we were going to close or not, we found out that there were a lot of accidents out there, especially on the north end of the district,” he said.Howard said he also takes into consideration that many of his students are inexperienced teen drivers and the goal is to keep them off the roads in challenging conditions.A stabbing in east Columbus has sent one victim to the hospital in stable condition.PREBLE COUNTY, Ohio -- A woman is dead after her car flipped over and caught fire in an Eaton parking lot Sunday morning.According to the Preble County SOhio man wins citizen hero award for adopting elderly dogsOhio State No. 1, 19 teams in the AP Top 25 take new spots The latest AP Top 25 poll saw major movement with 19 teams shifting spots.
