FluxPoint Energy announced an initiative to build a uranium conversion plant, reducing US reliance on foreign-controlled fuel processing.
Texas-based startup FluxPoint Energy has officially announced plans to build the first new US uranium conversion facility in more than seven decades. The company introduced the initiative this week at the CERAWeek conference in Houston to address what it describes as a critical gap in the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain.
This new facility is designed to restore a domestic capability that has been absent from new industrial construction since the middle of the twentieth century. The primary objective is to eliminate a specific bottleneck that currently limits the independence of the American nuclear energy sector.Uranium conversion is a technical bridge between mining and enrichment that is currently dominated by a small number of foreign providers. The global supply chain for this process is highly concentrated in countries such as Russia and China.“Policymakers, utilities, and developers increasingly point to fuel availability as a limiting factor for America’s nuclear reactors—both present and future,” said energy industry veteran Mike Chilton, Founder and CEO of FluxPoint Energy.“America cannot lead in nuclear energy while relying on foreign-controlled fuel processing.”Transforming uranium oxide into gaseous formThe planned facility will focus on converting uranium oxide into uranium hexafluoride, which is chemically known as UF6. This conversion is a necessary chemical step because uranium must be in a gaseous form before it can undergo the enrichment process. In the conversion process, the solid uranium oxide concentrate is reacted with fluorine to create the UF6 gas. This substance is then cooled into a solid for transport to enrichment plants where the concentration of uranium-235 is increased.Without this specific chemical transformation, the raw uranium mined from the ground cannot be utilized as fuel for nuclear power plants. The development of the FluxPoint facility is currently in an active phase with several key milestones already reached. The company has secured a specific project site and completed a comprehensive market study to evaluate long-term demand.“FluxPoint’s mission is to establish a fully American, vertically integrated nuclear fuel capability—supporting energy independence, enabling advanced reactor deployment, and strengthening national security,” concluded the company in a press release.Strengthening national energy infrastructureLarge-scale data centers and the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure require massive amounts of continuous electricity. This has led to a renewed interest in both traditional light-water reactors and the next generation of small modular reactors.Ensuring a domestic supply of converted uranium is seen as a way to decouple American energy growth from geopolitical shifts in the global fuel market. The push for private-sector conversion capability comes as the public sector also hits major milestones in nuclear material processing. The National Nuclear Security Administration recently restarted uranium purification at the Y-12 National Security Complex using a new electrorefining process. This milestone marks the first time in over two decades that such a capability has existed at the Oak Ridge site. The return of uranium metal purification is considered critical for maintaining the nuclear materials infrastructure of the United States. The purified uranium produced through this method will support national security missions and defense-related energy systems.
