ION Storage Systems becomes the first US solid-state battery company to achieve customer performance qualification for its Cornerstone Cell.

A U.S. battery developer has moved a step closer to bringing solid-state batteries into everyday devices. Recently, Maryland-based ION Storage Systems announced that a customer has successfully qualified the performance of its Cornerstone Cell.

The milestone marks the first time a U.S. solid-state battery company has achieved customer performance validation for its battery cell technology. The announcement follows the company’s shipment of sample cells in August 2025 to partners across industrial equipment, consumer electronics, and automotive sectors. With this qualification complete, the technology is moving beyond laboratory testing and into real-world evaluation by customers.Customer qualification marks key progressPassing customer qualification means that the battery cells have met strict performance standards set by a commercial partner. This step is often required before companies commit to large-scale purchasing or product integration.According to Jorge Diaz Schneider, CEO of ION Storage Systems, the achievement signals a major step forward for the company and the domestic battery industry.“We are the first US company to have passed performance qualification with our customer using our Cornerstone cells and plan production to start here in Maryland. We are excited about the new technologies we are unlocking and look forward to talking to more customers, helping them innovate without the restrictions of lithium-ion batteries.”The company noted the milestone demonstrates that its solid-state battery design can meet real customer requirements, not just controlled laboratory tests.A different battery architectureION’s Cornerstone Cell is based on a solid-state, anodeless architecture. Traditional lithium-ion batteries contain a liquid electrolyte and a separate anode component. These parts can limit performance and raise safety concerns, especially at higher temperatures. The company’s design removes the conventional anode and uses a solid electrolyte instead. This approach is intended to increase energy density, improve thermal stability, and enhance overall safety.Chief technology officer Greg Hitz said the technology reaching customer validation represents a defining moment for the company.“Bringing a solid-state, anodeless battery out of the lab and into the real world is a company-defining moment for ION. Our unique combination of high-temperature stability and performance characteristics stands alone in the battery market.”Solid-state batteries have long been viewed as the next step in battery technology because they promise safer operation and higher performance than many current lithium-ion systems.Strategy focuses on early commercial applicationsInstead of targeting electric vehicles first, ION is focusing on smaller or specialized applications where its technology can deliver immediate advantages. The company said this strategy reflects how lithium-ion batteries first entered the market decades ago. Early lithium-ion batteries were used in compact electronics before eventually expanding into large-scale uses such as electric vehicles.By serving high-value applications first, the company hopes to build manufacturing experience, customer trust, and steady demand before expanding into larger markets.ION believes this step-by-step approach allows its technology to prove reliability in practical settings while continuing to refine production.Manufacturing plans take shape in MarylandInitial production will come from the company’s facility in Beltsville, Maryland, where the site is currently undergoing expansion to support manufacturing. The company plans to install a new sintering furnace at the facility, which will be used in the production process for the solid-state battery components.ION expects commercial production to begin in 2026. As demand grows, the company anticipates needing additional manufacturing capacity beyond the Beltsville location.Planning for larger-scale production is already underway as the company prepares for broader adoption of its technology. If the rollout progresses as expected, the qualification of the Cornerstone Cell could mark an important step in bringing solid-state batteries from experimental development into practical commercial use across multiple industries.
