Purdue University makes history as the first US academic institution to provide students with onsite access to tabletop fusion technology.

Purdue University’s School of Health Sciences has completed the installation of the first Alpha-E tabletop fusion device in the United States. This acquisition establishes the university as the first domestic academic institution to provide students with direct, on-site access to fusion experimentation.

The device, manufactured by the technology company Alpha Ring, is now part of the university’s radiation instrumentation laboratory. It will serve as a primary tool for both the School of Health Sciences and the School of Nuclear Engineering as they expand their collective research into plasma physics and nuclear energy. The implementation of the Alpha-E aligns with the priorities outlined in the United States Roadmap for fusion strategy. By moving fusion training from large-scale national laboratories into a university classroom setting, Purdue aims to increase the number of students who possess practical experience with fusion reactions.“Being able to work directly with a fusion device like Alpha-E is a unique opportunity not many get. It’s exciting to be part of research that’s shaping the future of clean energy,” said Sharmin Jahan, a second-year PhD student studying health physics at Purdue University, in an email to Interesting Engineering.Technical integration with educational applicationThe Alpha-E is designed to be a safe and affordable platform for conducting plasma physics experiments and fusion diagnostics in a controlled environment. Unlike larger experimental reactors, this tabletop unit allows for frequent, hands-on use by students and faculty. The hardware generates data that can be used to inform wider research programs or to train artificial intelligence modeling systems. At Purdue, the device will be integrated into the existing radiation instrumentation teaching lab. This setup provides students with exposure to fusion technology and the practical skills required to manage the complex radiation environments associated with this field of study.Professor Allen Garner, representing the School of Nuclear Engineering, has partnered with the School of Health Sciences to utilize the Alpha-E for specialized training. The device will be used to instruct students on the radiation hardening of electronics, a process necessary for ensuring that electronic components can function in high-radiation environments like those found in space or near nuclear reactors. Institutional perspectives and global partnershipsThe purchase of the Alpha-E follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Purdue and Alpha Ring during the Monaco Clean Fusion Forum in April of the previous year. At that forum, Purdue joined several other international universities in an initiative to incorporate fusion technology into academic labs worldwide. This collaboration reflects a broader institutional goal to remain at the forefront of nuclear and radiological health sciences. Jason Harris, who serves as the associate dean for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at Purdue, stated that the experience provided by the Alpha-E equips students with the technical skills necessary for the evolving energy sector.Charles Gary, the CEO of Alpha Ring, noted that the Alpha-E was developed to make fusion research more accessible to academic programs. He indicated that increasing the amount of time researchers spend working with physical fusion devices is a necessary step for advancing education and bringing fusion energy closer to practical application.
