The first severe human case of bird flu (H5N1) in the United States has been reported in Louisiana, prompting a state of emergency declaration in California due to an outbreak among dairy cows.

Bird flu ( H5N1 ) continues to spread across the United States, prompting warnings and emergency declarations. On December 13, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the country's first severe case of bird flu in a human. The patient, from southwestern Louisiana , is hospitalized. The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) reports the person was exposed to sick and dead birds suspected of being infected. The LDH is collaborating with the CDC on genomic testing of the virus.

There have been 61 human cases nationwide since April 2024, but no human-to-human transmission has been reported, leading the CDC to maintain that the public risk is low. Despite this, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday due to an outbreak of the virus among dairy cows in Southern California farms. Newsom stated that the proclamation aims to provide government agencies with the necessary resources and flexibility to respond quickly. 'This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak,' Newsom said. 'Building on California’s testing and monitoring system — the largest in the nation — we are committed to further protecting public health, supporting our agricultural industry, and ensuring that Californians have access to accurate, up-to-date information,' he continued. 'While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus,
