Lawmakers say delay in making the sequence public held up vaccine work

The first sequence of SARS-CoV-2 was deposited in a database in late December 2019, earlier than had been thought.A U.S. House of Representatives panel yesterday released evidence that a Chinese research team submitted a SARS-CoV-2 genome to a U.S. database on 28 December 2019, nearly 2 weeks before a sequence from another group became public and kick-started the race to develop vaccines and drugs for COVID-19.

’s GenBank submission, also released by the House committee yesterday, suggests she gave the submission an embargo to keep it from going public until a later date, Débarre says. That’s not unusual; researchers typically embargo a genome sequence submission until they publish a paper on it.

Holmes sees Ren’s GenBank submission as a sign of an initial openness. “That almost first thought … was to send the genome sequence to an arm of U.S. government is the exact opposite of a cover-up. To claim anything nefarious here is pathetic and idiotic,” he says.
