The first returning Mike Flanagan actor has officially been cast in his new movie reboot of The Exorcist. Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing the feature film, which is neither a remake nor a sequel but a"fresh and bold" take on the franchise set in The Exorcist universe.
Mike Flanagan's Exorcist movie has already made a big splash by casting Scarlett Johansson, and followed that up with the addition of Jacobi Jupe and Diane Lane, none of whom have ever worked with the famed horror filmmaker before. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chiwetel Ejiofor has joined Mike Flanagan's Exorcist movie, reuniting with the director after The Life of Chuck , his latest Stephen King adaptation. Sources say Ejiofor will play a former convict who becomes a priest, while Johansson will play the mother of Jacobi Jupe's character. Shooting is set to start in New York City. Chiwetel Ejiofor also reunites with Scarlett Johansson, having recently starred in her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great . Mike Flanagan is known for frequently working with recurring actors – including his wife Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, Carla Gugino, Rahul Kohli, Bruce Greenwood, Michael Trucco, Annalise Basso, Henry Thomas, and Mark Hamill – who reappear in TV shows such as his Haunting series, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Mike Flanagan's next project is a fresh feature-length take on the original 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, which was based on William Peter Blatty's novel and directed by William Friedkin, following the demonic possession of a young girl, Regan MacNeil , her mother Chris MacNeil , and the Catholic priests who attempt to save her through an exorcism. In turn, Chiwetel Ejiofor appears to be playing a role similar to one of these priests, either Father Lankester Merrin , Father Damien Karras , or Father Joseph Dyer . It also stands to reason that Jacobi Jupe is playing the young boy who will be possessed. Ejiofor is an Oscar-nominated actor for his performance as Soloman Northup in 12 Years a Slave , and will join a cast that includes fellow Oscar nominees Scarlett Johansson , Diane Lane , and Hamnet breakout Jacobi Jupe.
