The first grades are in for Crime 101, and so far, it looks like the new action thriller is passing with flying colors. Early reactions to the film, which pits MCU stars Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo against each other, are calling it the best movie of the year to date.
You can find out for yourself when Crime 101 hits theaters on February 13, 2026. The embargo for early reactions, but not reviews, has been lifted for the film in advance of its release next Friday, and if they're anything to judge by, theaters should be as packed as the film's namesake highway. Erik Davis, of Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes, calls it"the kind of classy heist thriller we don’t see much of these days." Critic Tom Chatalbash says it's"slickly crafted, tightly written, and filled to the brim with compelling characters and a moody, immersive LA atmosphere." Next Big Picture's Matt Neglia says it's a"cool, mid-budget crowd-pleaser made for the dads." Many comparisons are being made to Michael Mann's Heat, another Los Angeles-set crime thriller that follows a cop and a criminal in the context of a major score. It's also been likened to Mann's Thief and Collateral, as well as Out of Sight and Drive; it's illustrious company that bodes well for the film's reviews. The film will be in contention with Emerald Fennell's already-controversial adaptation of Wuthering Heights when it hits theaters next Friday. What Is 'Crime 101' About? Hemsworth stars as Mike Davis, a notorious Los Angeles jewel thief who typically strikes along Route 101. He's planning for the biggest theft of his career, putting him on a collision course with insurance broker Sharon Colvin . However, there's a dogged cop on his trail: Detective Lou Lubesnick , who believes he's cracked the pattern of Davis' heists. The film also stars Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte. It was written and directed by British film-maker Bart Layton; a BAFTA winner for directing the 2012 documentary The Impostor, he made his narrative feature debut with 2018's American Animals. Crime 101 is his sophomore feature. Crime 101 is an adaptation of the Don Winslow novella of the same name. Winslow's works have been adapted a number of times for the screen, including the Paul Walker actioner The Life and Death of Bobby Z and the Oliver Stone thriller Savages; several other Winslow projects are in development.
