Elaine Morell, 59, was the first to be struck by the bin lorry in the tragedy on Queen Street in the city centre on December 22, 2014. She returns to George Square each year to lay flowers.

The first person struck in the Glasgow bin lorry tragedy returns to the scene each year to lay flowers and remember those who lost their lives.

She had just left her city centre office for lunch when the tragedy unfolded, as reported by the Daily Record. Elaine, from Kirkintilloch, said: “I was working just on the corner of Royal Exchange Square at the time in a private jewellers and had taken my lunch later than normal.“That decision changed my life. The next thing I remember was waking up in hospital with the doctor telling me I was the luckiest person they’d ever seen.

“I do remember finding out that people had died and just couldn’t process it. How are you supposed to deal with that?
