The system could raise rainfall totals to seasonal averages and a storm expected on New Year's Eve could be stronger, but likely won't bring snow to the local mountains.

The first of two Pacific storms will push into San Diego County on Tuesday night and likely drop a half-inch or more of rain at and near the coast and slightly more in the foothills and mountains by early Wednesday, says the National Weather Service.

The rain represents the tail of a much larger system that is soaking the Bay Area and is expected to bring heavy snow to the Sierra Nevada, benefiting many of the state’s reservoirs. The storm is drawing some of its moisture from the subtropics, making it warmer than many systems. But daytime high temperatures will be in the low 60s throughout coastal areas well into Saturday, when the second storm arrives. Forecasters say rain could begin on New Year’s Eve and last well into New Year’s Day. Up to an inch is possible.A high-surf advisory is in effect for the San Diego County coastline and will remain active until 4 p.m. Thursday.

Since the latest rainy season began on Oct. 1, San Diego International Airport has recorded 2.09 inches of precipitation, which is 0.54 inches below average.
