After the first major snowfall of the season, Anchorage police are reporting an increased number of non-injury and injury collisions, along with distressed vehicle calls around the city.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage drivers and snowplow crews were handed their first real test of the winter season on Sunday.

“It’s the first one out of the boat, It’s a test for us and it’s a test for all the drivers too. So, you know, I think reality hits pretty quickly and we’ll all be working together. We’re asking for a little bit of patience, a little bit of room, this first plow-out is always a little bit slow going because we’re establishing our boundaries,” Vanlandingham said.Vanlandingham expects to have all arterial and collector roads plowed by Monday morning.

With the increased snow, the municipality is reminding drivers of the importance of taking precautionary measures while on roadways. “It’s going well so far, this is a wet, heavy snow. It’s above freezing in most of Anchorage right now, so the snow is real wet and heavy, but it hasn’t had a major impact on plowing so far, the snow load has been light enough we can keep up,” Shelby said.
