A UH-60 Black Hawk has successfully completed automated liftoff, hover, flight and landing using Moog's Genesys GRC 4000 autopilot.
A US aerospace and defense technology company has successfully tested its new Genesys GRC 4000 autopilot on a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter as part of a demo including automated liftoff, hover, enroute flight and landing.
New York–based Moog Inc. announced that its novel Genesys GRC 4000 four-axis rotorcraft autopilot marked a major step toward increased automation in military aviation during the demonstration flight in October 2025. The system was paired with a Black Hawk’s Genesys Avionics Suite. The upgraded UH-60 completed a fully automated flight. It performed liftoff, hover, enroute flight, and landing with minimal pilot intervention.According to the company, the entire automated flight could be initiated with the press of a single button. It showcased that advanced autopilot systems could take over complex flight phases traditionally handled by pilots.A one-button flightWhile helicopter missions require pilots to manage multiple demanding tasks at once, Moog Inc’s autopilot system is built to handle some of the most complex maneuvers so pilots can focus on critical decisions. Nick Bogner, director of business development at Moog highlighted automation’s significance. “The future of aviation is increased safety and aircraft performance through automation,” Bogner pointed out. Bogner emphasized that the GRC 4000 is capable of continuously performing high-complexity control functions. This allows pilots to shift their attention to situational awareness and operational objectives. These prevent dangerous flight conditions and can protect the rotorcraft from exceeding safe speed limits. In addition, they can automatically recover the aircraft to a near-level attitude if necessary. The system also features multiple pitch and roll control modes which help stabilize the aircraft and guide navigation. The pitch controls include altitude hold, indicated airspeed hold, vertical speed hold, and glide slope tracking. Meanwhile, the roll control modes support heading hold, navigation tracking, localizer guidance, and VOR navigation. Smarter helicopter controlMoog Inc. noted that the GRC 4000 can also integrated optional yaw control. This is the mechanism that manages the aircraft’s rotation around its vertical axis, thus allowing the helicopter’s nose to turn left or right. One of the most notable features of the novel system is a fourth-axis automation function that enables automated takeoff, hover hold and landing. The autopilot remains active from startup through shutdown, thus supporting stable operations under instrument flight rules and across many environmental conditions.“The GRC 4000 expands Moog’s Genesys GRC Autopilot family with a lightweight, affordable, attitude-based 4-axis solution that combines stability augmentation with advanced autopilot modes,” the firm said.“The GRC 4000 performs constant, high complexity, control tasks allowing pilots to focus on mission-critical roles – while improving safety and ensuring mission success,” Bogner concluded in a press release.Moog intends to showcase the technology at Verticon 2026, the world’s biggest vertical aviation conference and trade show. It will be held between March 9 and 12, in Atlanta, Georgia. The company designs and manufactures precision motion and control systems used in aircraft, space, defense and industrial applications. At the event, it will exhibit a Black Hawk equipped with its avionics systems.
