The Utah County Health Department confirmed the patient is a woman and a resident of Utah County , but to protect privacy and confidentiality will not release more information about her."We are reporting the first human case of West Nile Virus in a human of the 2024 season. West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans by mosquito bite," said Eric Edwards , UCHD Executive Director. "People should take extra caution when enjoying outdoor activities .
West Nile Virus is a disease that is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitos can be infected when they feed on the blood of infected birds, UCHD said. The infected mosquitos can then transmit the virus to humans and animals. Severe West Nile Virus infections can cause neurologic complications, but milder symptoms include fever, headache, and muscle aches.
