Gateway Development Commission awarded the first $465 million tunnel contract to drill the first section of Hudson River rail tunnel through the Palisades.

The contract was awarded to Schiavone, Dragados Lane Joint Venture, which was selected from five firms that competed for the contract.

It represents the first tunnel building in the $16 billion project to build two new Hudson River rail tunnels to serve Amtrak and NJ Transit trains and to rehabilitate the existing 115-year-old tunnels. The association has called for construction of new Hudson River rail tunnels in its third and fourth and current regional plans, she said.

“More than half the contracts that make up the Hudson River tunnel project will be under construction,” Bowden Akbar said. “There is no turning back now.”whose last day at the commission is Aug. 16,
