A new candidate for an exomoon—a moon that orbits planets beyond the realm of our Solar System—has been announced today in Nature Astronomy.

Why exomoons are so hard to find

It’s much harder to detect a moon simply because it’s more difficult to separate that signal into distinct objects. Ganymede, Jupiter's moon, which is the largest moon in our Solar System. This image was obtained by NASA's Juno Spacecraft JunoCam imager during a flyby of the icy moon on 7 June 2021.Moons have been very important in the formation and evolution of the planets in our Solar System—and may either host life themselves or be a deciding factor on whether there’s life on a planet.
