First ever footage of giant squid in U.S. waters captured by scientists

This is only the second time in history that a giant squid has been filmed in its natural deep sea habitat.

Scientists have captured astonishing footage of a giant squid in the Gulf of Mexico, around 100 miles southeast of New Orleans, in what is just the second time that the creature has been filmed in its natural deep sea habitat—and the first in U.S. waters.

MEDUSA was used to capture the only other footage of a giant squid in its deep sea home during an expedition in Japanese waters conducted by scientists in 2012. After capturing the footage, the expedition scientists sent it to a NOAA squid specialist to confirm that the creature was actually a true giant squid—or in other words, that it belonged to the genus Architeuthis.
